This paper considers the effects on the labour market of the increase in life expectancy and provides an overview of the initiatives taken by different countries in relation to the ageing of the population. A significant response to the problem of the sustainability of demographic ageing consists of the implementation of policies aimed at facilitating the extension of working life, as well as policies for promoting participation on the return of older persons to the world of work. The paper considers also social costs arising from the lack of employment for older persons, in terms of psychological well-being and health.
