Verità storica e memoria collettiva. L’ambiguità di un rapporto necessario

The article examines the relationship between history and memory, trying to identify the points of contact, as well as the tensions that can arise. If historical knowledge allows us to come to terms with the past, it is also true that political contingencies can suggest evasive strategies with respect to the bad things a political community has done, thus favoring the construction of a mutilated memory. In turn, a memory based on partial elements negatively affects a correct historical understanding, facilitating more or less extensive falsifications of the past. The aim of the paper is to clarify the mechanisms behind these processes, hypothesizing theoretical lines capable, if not of solving the problems, at least of effectively delineating their contours.

L’articolo esamina il rapporto tra storia e memoria, cercando di individuare i punti di contatto, così come le tensioni che si possono creare. Se la conoscenza storica consente di fare i conti col passato, è anche vero che le contingenze politiche possono suggerire strategie elusive rispetto a ciò che di male una comunità politica ha fatto, favorendo così la costruzione di una memoria mutilata. A sua volta, una memoria basata su elementi parziali incide negativamente su una corretta comprensione storica, agevolando falsificazioni più o meno ampie del passato. Scopo dello scritto è chiarire i meccanismi che stanno dietro questi processi, ipotizzando linee teoriche capaci, se non di risolvere i problemi, perlomeno di delinearne efficacemente i contorni.
