This contribution discusses the ways in which motion verbs create theological and narrative perspectives of the Last Judgment, as expressed in Old High German, Old English, and Old Saxon eschatological texts. It attempts to demonstrate that linguistic choices reflect conceptions of time, perspectives, and participation in the event by analyzing their use and metaphorical functions. These verbs reveal shifting viewpoints —from collective expectation to individual encounter— that bring forth the experiential dimension of eschatological discourse.

Abstract

This contribution discusses the ways in which motion verbs create theological and narrative perspectives of the Last Judgment, as expressed in Old High German, Old English, and Old Saxon eschatological texts. It attempts to demonstrate that linguistic choices reflect conceptions of time, perspectives, and participation in the event by analyzing their use and metaphorical functions. These verbs reveal shifting viewpoints —from collective expectation to individual encounter— that bring forth the experiential dimension of eschatological discourse.
