«Lume v’è dato a bene e a malizia» (Purg. XVI, 75): il libero arbitrio tra ‘voluntas’ e ‘potestas’

This essay focuses on the middle «versura» of Dante’s Commedia, with reference, first of all, to ‘Purgatorio’, XVI 75 and the ancient commentaries about this verse. In the ancient exegesis the word lume is contrasted with ‘buio’/‘fumo’ at the beginning of the canto. This is linked to the juridical concepts of arbitrium in the sense of ‘facultas potestatis’ or as ‘facultas voluntatis’. We will look first at Iacomo della Lana, his commentary and latin translation by Alberico da Rosciate, with original glosses and paraphrases.

Questo saggio si concentra sulla mediana «versura» della ‘Commedia’ di Dante, con riferimento, innanzitutto, a ’Purgatorio’, XVI 75 e all’antica tradizione esegetica. Nei commenti antichi «lume» è contrapposto ai termini «buio»/«fumo» – posti all’inizio del canto –, secondo una prospettiva strettamente legata ai concetti giuridici di ‘arbitrium’ nel senso di ‘facultas potestatis’ o ‘facultas voluntatis’. Saranno presi in esame, in particolare, il commento laneo e la traduzione latina che Alberico da Rosciate ne offre, con glosse e parafrasi originali.
