This essay proposes a phenomenology of translation in which silence functions as the generative Zwischenraum enabling the translator’s receptive withdrawal toward the text’s alterity. Drawing on Ricoeur, Waldenfels, and Dauenhauer, it frames translation as a responsive act rather than a transfer of equivalences. A case study on translating Thomas Harrison’s Of Bridges and its Rilke epigraph illustrates how multiple forms of otherness are negotiated through this silent intermediate space.

Abstract

This essay proposes a phenomenology of translation in which silence functions as the generative Zwischenraum enabling the translator’s receptive withdrawal toward the text’s alterity. Drawing on Ricoeur, Waldenfels, and Dauenhauer, it frames translation as a responsive act rather than a transfer of equivalences. A case study on translating Thomas Harrison’s Of Bridges and its Rilke epigraph illustrates how multiple forms of otherness are negotiated through this silent intermediate space.
