The dissertation investigates the emergence and progressive consolidation of the sonnet form in the final phase of Yves Bonnefoy’s poetic production, focusing on the decisive role of his work as a translator and, in particular, on his experience translating a selection of sonnets from Petrarch’s Canzoniere. Following the path traced by Bonnefoy himself – who consistently conceived translation and poetic creation as a continuous and fertile dialogue – the study shows how the reflection developed through the translational act informed and reshaped the poet’s own creative gesture, fostering both the rediscovery and the deliberate adoption of the sonnet form. After examining Bonnefoy’s translations of Petrarch’s sonnets and analysing the various retranslations of Shakespeare’s sonnets, the dissertation turns to his late poetic collections – La longue chaîne de l’ancre and L’Heure présente – in which the sonnet emerges as a constant and structuring presence, a privileged site of poetic inquiry. Through a stylistic analysis of the different editions of the translation corpus and of the poetic works, the study reconstructs the trajectory that led Bonnefoy to a renewed valuation of the sonnet, a form capable of responding to a deep-seated desire within his poetry and of demonstrating, once again, the close relationship between translation and poetic creation.
La tesi indaga l’emergere e il progressivo consolidarsi della forma sonetto nell’ultima stagione poetica di Yves Bonnefoy, ponendo al centro il ruolo determinante dell’attività traduttiva e, in particolare, dell’esperienza di traduzione di una selezione di sonetti del Canzoniere di Petrarca. Seguendo il solco tracciato dallo stesso Bonnefoy, per il quale traduzione e creazione poetica intrattengono un dialogo continuo e fecondo, lo studio mostra come la riflessione maturata a partire dal gesto traduttivo abbia orientato il gesto poetico dell’autore, favorendo la riscoperta e la decisione dell’impiego della forma sonetto. Dopo uno studio delle traduzioni dei sonetti petrarcheschi e un’analisi delle diverse ritraduzioni dei sonetti shakespeariani, il lavoro si concentra sulle ultime raccolte poetiche di Yves Bonnefoy – La longue chaîne de l’ancre e L’Heure présente –, nelle quali il sonetto si afferma come una presenza costante e strutturante, luogo privilegiato di interrogazione poetica. Attraverso un’analisi stilistica delle diverse edizioni del corpus delle traduzioni e delle opere poetiche, la presente tesi ricostruisce dunque il percorso che ha condotto Bonnefoy alla rivalutazione del sonetto, forma capace di rispondere a un desiderio profondo della sua poesia e di dare prova, ancora una volta, dello stretto rapporto tra traduzione e opera poetica.
