Dalla fabbrica al palcoscenico: il lavoro come simbolo e utopia nella letteratura della DDR

This essay examines the evolution of the representation of work in the literature of the German Democratic Republic, from the early years of the socialist state to German Reunification in 1989/1990. Drawing on the theoretical contrast between the Frankfurt School’s critique of instrumental reason and Ernst Bloch’s notion of concrete utopia, the study reconstructs the symbolic and ideological value attributed to work in the GDR, initially conceived as a foundation of identity and emancipation, and later increasingly marked by tension, alienation, and disillusionment. Through an analysis of key cultural moments such as the Bitterfeld Path and the Ankunftsliteratur, and focusing in particular on the works of Uwe Johnson, Christa Wolf, and Heiner Müller, the article shows how work shifts from a celebratory category to a critical space of conflict between individual and collective, memory and ideology. In the trajectory leading from socialist realism to Müller’s dialectical and deconstructive theatre, work becomes a metaphor for the fracture between utopian promise and historical reality, assuming an aesthetic and political function that radically questions the limits of the socialist project.

Il contributo analizza l’evoluzione della rappresentazione del lavoro nella letteratura della Repubblica Democratica Tedesca, dalla fase fondativa dello Stato socialista fino alla Riunificazione del 1989/1990. Muovendo dal confronto teorico tra la critica della ragione strumentale della Scuola di Francoforte e l’utopia concreta di Ernst Bloch, lo studio ricostruisce il valore simbolico e ideologico attribuito al lavoro nella DDR, dapprima inteso come fondamento identitario ed emancipatorio, poi progressivamente segnato da tensioni, alienazione e disincanto. Attraverso l’analisi di momenti chiave quali il Bitterfelder Weg e l’Ankunftsliteratur, e soffermandosi in particolare sulle opere di Uwe Johnson, Christa Wolf e Heiner Müller, l’articolo mostra come il lavoro si trasformi da categoria celebrativa a spazio critico di conflitto tra individuo e collettività, memoria e ideologia. Nella parabola che conduce dal realismo socialista al teatro dialettico e destrutturante di Müller, il lavoro diventa metafora della frattura tra promessa utopica e realtà storica, assumendo una funzione estetica e politica che interroga radicalmente i limiti del progetto socialista.
