The article tackles an unresolved etymological issue in the lexicon of Sardinian, namely the Sardinian word [ˈmatta] in its different meanings: Campidanese ‘plant, tree’ and Logudorese ‘plant’ (but not ‘tree’). In particular, the article proposes a solution different from the one traditionally accepted by the REW for Romance languages (Vulgar Latin matta ‘straw mat’).
