To mark the 1,500th anniversary of Theodoric’s death, this is an analysis of his contribution to the history of the late antique Mediterranean and of the relationship between this "barbarian" ruler and the refined ruling classes of the Italian peninsula—prior to their marginalization following Justinian’s conquest (535–553).
