This chapter examines the historical evolution of the concept of autonomy of sport in EU law from its origins in the 1970s to the judgment of the General Court in Meca-Medina.3 In its early case law, the Court approached sport exclusively through the lens of economic activity. Professional and organised sport was increasingly regarded as part of the internal market, and therefore subject, as a matter of principle, to the fundamental freedoms and competition rules of EU law.
