The definition of NEET is not univocal. It originated in England in the 1980s to refer to 16-18year olds in the school-to-work transition. In 2010 it was adopted by the European Union to refer to the loss of intelligence among 15- to 29-year-olds. In Italy within the NEET 2022 plan issued by the Ministry of Labor and the Ministry of Youth Policies, the NEET bracket was expanded up to 34 years old including late NEETs. In the literature, the concept of NEET varies according to the culture and the socioeconomic status of the country concerned. In Italy, there is a high percentage of NEETs (17.7 per cent May 2023) which does not decrease in the 30-34 range. While presenting a similar situation to Italy, the other Mediterranean countries do not consider young adults in the statistics. Through the explanation of the four main NEET profiles namely: active, disengaged, implementers, and unavailable the research aims to highlight the different factors that lead to the NEET status. It questions the reasons in Italy for prolonging this condition until the age of 34 by analysing the strengths and weaknesses of the strategies adopted to date. Through the analysis issues emerged on which contribution of educational research is urgent and relevant.
