The contribution opens with a general introduction to a phoric (anaphoric and cataphoric) and deictic use of the two German pronominal types. First, the pronouns are analysed and compared on the ground of different features of their textual referents (living vs. inanimate referents; antecedent vs. postponed referents; topic continuity and distance from the pronominal forms). Then, each token is considered according to some of the d-pronouns and personal pronouns characteristics (Fokuspartikel before or after the pronouns; pronouns in Vorfeld vs. Mittelfeld). Finally, the last section summarizes the main uses of the two pronominal froms. D-pronouns are used either with nominal antecedents or with postponed referents. They generally occur in the Vorfeld and signalize new topics of discourse; also they usually follow directly their referents. Fokuspartikel demand the use of d-pronouns. On the contrary, personal pronouns are mostly used for anaphoric references in the Mittelfeld. Indicating topic continuity, such pronouns are normally separated from their antecedents by other syntactic constituents or sentences.

Abstract
Indicating topic continuity, such pronouns are normally separated from their antecedents by other syntactic constituents or sentences.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
