This article focuses on the comparison between Tacitus’ Annales (Annales - Ab excessu divi Augusti) and Dostoevsky's Demons (Besy). The analysis will be grounded on the concept of “stasis” developed by the ancient Greek historiographer Thucydides. The main theoretical framework is constituted by Ellen O’Gorman’s works in classical philology. The critic explained how Tacitus was influenced by Thucydides’s historiographical categories in his portrait of the imperial Rome: not only Tacitus described a period of social disorder, but he also made the reader aware of the existential condition of society who was experiencing an historical moment of crisis, and then of a complicated recovery. I will argue that the concept of “stasis” can be fruitfully applied also to Dostoevsky’s Demons, as it will be clarified by the comparison between the novel and Tacitus’ Annales.

Abstract
I will argue that the concept of “stasis” can be fruitfully applied also to Dostoevsky’s Demons, as it will be clarified by the comparison between the novel and Tacitus’ Annales.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
