This article examines the influence of the European human rights system on the case law of the Hungarian Constitutional Court. Starting with one of the first rulings of the Court concerning the abolition of the death penalty, the analysis focuses on decisions regarding classical freedoms, especially the freedom of thought and expression, as well as, in general, the so-called “freedoms of communication”. Particular attention is paid to the legal guarantees for basic rights during criminal trials, as resulting from the dialogue between the Hungarian Constitutional Court and the Strasbourg Court.
