Italian Catholic missions were decisively important among Italian immigrant organizations in Switzerland, yet they remain an under-researched area. The article documents the complexity of these associations, both in terms of their configuration and the people and structures that were involved in their activities. In the course of their history, they became an intermediate type of organization, something between an association and a parish. On the one hand, secular priests and nuns organized top-down everything that strictly related to liturgy and pastoral care. On the other hand, these same priests also formed dialectical relationships with thousands of «Gastarbeiter» (foreign workers), who were in precarious situations and in need of activities and places of socialization. This led to the provision of services offering assistance and to the organization of activities and meetings that were in part detached from religion. This article combines different types of sources to outline the profile of a network of such organizations and to reveal their multifaceted nature.

Abstract
This article combines different types of sources to outline the profile of a network of such organizations and to reveal their multifaceted nature.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
