Since the implementation of lower secondary schools both in Kenya and Italy, efforts have been made to provide quality education for all without distinction of race, gender, and social economic and cultural status but various research show this has yet to be achieved. Yet these efforts have given rise to free and compulsory lower education. This paper offers a comparative analysis of the variations in the quality of education among the 6th year pupils in compulsory school in Kenya and Italy. In the Kenyan education system structure 6th year refers to standard six of the upper primary school, which is equivalent to the 1st year of the Italian lower secondary school. Our research shows that in Kenya grade repetition, socio-economic background, pupil age, and gender (at the pupil level) and school resources and location (at school level) are the most important factors accounting for the variations in pupil achievement. As for Italy socio economic-cultural background, gender, age, and ethnic background (at pupil level) and school location (at the school level) were identified as common contributors to the variations in the performance.
Fin dall’attuazione di scuole secondarie inferiori, sia in Kenya e in Italia, sono stati compiuti sforzi per fornire un’istruzione di qualità per tutti senza distinzione di razza, sesso e status economico, culturale e sociale, ma varie ricerche mostrano che ciò deve ancora essere raggiunto. Tuttavia questi sforzi hanno dato luogo a istruzione inferiore obbligatoria e gratuita. Questo documento offre un’analisi com- parativa delle variazioni della qualità della formazione tra gli allievi del 6° anno della scuola dell’obbligo in Kenya e in Italia. Nella strut- tura del sistema di istruzione keniota il 6° anno si riferisce al livello sei della scuola primaria superiore, che è equivalente al 1° anno della scuola secondaria di primo grado italiana. La nostra ricerca mostra che in Kenya la ripetizione di una classe, il background socio- economico, l’età degli alunni e il genere (a livello di alunni), le risorse della scuola e la posizione (a livello scolastico) sono i fattori più importanti che rappresentano le variazioni di acquisizioni formative degli alunni. Per quanto riguarda l’Italia il contesto socio-econo- mico-culturale, il genere, l’età, l’origine etnica (a livello di alunni) e la posizione della scuola (a livello di scuola) sono stati identificati come comuni fattori che contribuiscono alle variazioni di prestazioni.
