Parahypotaxis, a label created in 1929 in order to describe structures like «S’io dissi il falso, e tu falsasti il conio» (Dante, Inferno XXX, 115) has been recently dealt with in several contributions. A survey of the new proposals about its origin and status enables us to claim that: a) the origin of this particular pattern is neither monogenetic nor restricted, at least apparently, to the Romance languages; b) this particular pattern is very likely to derive from anaphoric textual chains traceable back to Proto-Indo-European; c) the pro- totypical function of parahypotaxis, if any, is to stress the cohesion of the text rather than to have demarcative functions; d) the claim that this pattern still survives in the dialect of Florence should be tested more carefully.
