The Greek language in Western Europe started spreading after Greeks founded their colonies in Gallia and Spain in the viith c. BC. Documents that witness such a spread are almost exclusively inscriptions, dating back from vii BC untill V c. AD and in some case even later, by means of which Greeks tried to re-adfirm their identity. Parallel to the history of the Greek language is the fate of the Greek alphabet, which was adopted by the Celts and employed to write inscriptions in Gaulish. Examining the oldest inscriptions it can be assumed that some peculiarities of Gaulish could be due to Greek.

Abstract
The Greek language in Western Europe started spreading after Greeks founded their colonies in Gallia and Spain in the viith c. BC. Documents that witness such a spread are almost exclusively inscriptions, dating back from vii BC untill V c. AD and in some case even later, by means of which Greeks tried to re-adfirm their identity. Parallel to the history of the Greek language is the fate of the Greek alphabet, which was adopted by the Celts and employed to write inscriptions in Gaulish. Examining the oldest inscriptions it can be assumed that some peculiarities of Gaulish could be due to Greek.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
