The clash between democracy and populism was one of the main issues tackled by Sinclair Lewis in his 1935 novel "It Can't happen Here". This article describes the political rise of Bezelius Windrip, the fictional populist hero of Sinclair's novel, and analyzes the readings of "It Can't Happen here" offered by contemporary US readers in the wake of Donald Trump's election. The discussion of the representation of the American working-class includes references to fictional works by Lucia Berlin and Philipp Meyer.
Analisi del dibattito su populismo e democrazia, emerso nella scia del successo elettorale di Donald Trump, a partire dalle osservazioni presenti nel romanzo It Can't Happen Here (Da noi non può succedere) scritto nel 1935 da Sinclair Lewis, scrittore americano premiato nel 1930 con il Premio Nobel per la Letteratura. L'articolo fa inoltre riferimento ad alcune opere di Lucia Berlin e Philipp Meyer, indicate quali esempi di narrativa americana che dà spazio a personaggi e contesti ai margini del sogno americano.
