The present paper aims to offer in a historical-pedagogic way, some insights about the debate between the different ideas of school-life and school-institution, starting with Niccolò Tommaseo work. His thought, even lacking a clear structure, can be inscribed in an educational tension present in many cultural circles during XIX century. This thought has been developed from a Christian point of view and has become the center of a pedagogical conception based on life experience.
