Fretting wear removes material from contact surfaces and leads to a loss of interference fit between mating parts. If the interference fit is essential for the operation of the machine this loss, if excessive, can lead to catastrophic failure of the mechanical components. This is the reason because the wear reduction between contact surfaces has received much attention in recent years from aerospace industry. Recently the approach to the wear reduction is to make use of surface treatments and coatings as theirs tribological properties are excellent. It is against this background that new material for coatings and new deposition processes are being developed and are having a significant impact on the aerospace industry. In this work a methodology to evaluate the loss of interference fit for material with a very low wear rate will be investigated.
