This paper presents a case study of the introduction of bilingual road signs in Val di Nizza, a small municipality in the province of Pavia, Italy. Although this policy has recently seen widespread usage in Italy, it has often been met with fierce opposition for its alleged political, and not linguistic, nature. After an introductory section in which this aspect will be briefly expanded upon, we will describe and classify the road signs that make up the corpus and analyze the orthography that was devised to write down the local Italo-Romance dialect. In the last sections we offer some perspective on the context of the introduction of the signs and discuss their possible symbolic implications
