The article is dedicated to the role of purism in the Russian translation of two important codes of the Italian legal Risorgimento, the Civil Code of the Kingdom of Italy and the Commercial Code of the Kingdom of Italy (both1865). In particular, different types of puristic substitutions made by S.I.Zarudnyj are analyzed in the translations of the two codes, published in the Russian Empire in 1869 and 1870 respectively. Thanks to the methods of lexicological and historical-lexicographic analysis, it is shown that Zarudnyj resorted to excessive purism to render some terms. It is argued, however, that Zarudnyj’s purism does not align him with the staunch supporters of the Slavophile tendency but was rather caused by ‘protective’ considerations of an ideological nature: since his desire was to make the Italian law known to the Russian public, his choices as a translator constitute an attempt to protect his work from assaults by reactionaries and conservatives.

Abstract
The article is dedicated to the role of purism in the Russian translation of two important codes of the Italian legal Risorgimento, the Civil Code of the Kingdom of Italy and the Commercial Code of the Kingdom of Italy (both1865). In particular, different types of puristic substitutions made by S.I.Zarudnyj are analyzed in the translations of the two codes, published in the Russian Empire in 1869 and 1870 respectively. Thanks to the methods of lexicological and historical-lexicographic analysis, it is shown that Zarudnyj resorted to excessive purism to render some terms. It is argued, however, that Zarudnyj’s purism does not align him with the staunch supporters of the Slavophile tendency but was rather caused by ‘protective’ considerations of an ideological nature: since his desire was to make the Italian law known to the Russian public, his choices as a translator constitute an attempt to protect his work from assaults by reactionaries and conservatives.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
