Semantic projections, such as metaphors, and morphological processes, such as derivation, can establish new correspondences between word and image. This paper examines what happens when metaphors and derivatives documented in an ancient text are translated, with specific reference to the Epistle to the Corinthians by Clement of Rome, written in Greek and then translated into Latin. The Epistle is an important witness to the formation of Christian vocabulary in both languages, and the two features investigated here highlight the role of semantic and linguistic image as a valuable communicative tool in texts from the past.

Abstract
Semantic projections, such as metaphors, and morphological processes, such as derivation, can establish new correspondences between word and image. This paper examines what happens when metaphors and derivatives documented in an ancient text are translated, with specific reference to the Epistle to the Corinthians by Clement of Rome, written in Greek and then translated into Latin. The Epistle is an important witness to the formation of Christian vocabulary in both languages, and the two features investigated here highlight the role of semantic and linguistic image as a valuable communicative tool in texts from the past.File | Dimensione del file | Formato | |
