Maria Vittoria Molinari wrote a number of works on Old English poetry, beginning with the poem Beowulf. Her analyses were devoted to both style and content. The political commitment of her research is evident in the thorough study of the portrayal of ancient society and the network of power as it emerges from these poems. Such appraisal is also relevant to understanding not only a number of High and Middle German poems, but also much later events and even contemporary society. Her essays devoted to the kenning and the nominal compounds of Old English poetry are extremely valuable. Her complete works betrays a deep awareness of the role of philology and the strict relationship which should exist between editing and translating
