The body of poems attributed to the German poet Walther von der Vogelweide is marked by a fairly high degree of variance. Since translating a medieval text for a modern audience engages the translator in defining the text to be translated, in this article I discuss the importance (or even the necessity) of taking a philological approach to the whole process leading to the final translation.
