The International League for New Education, through its member scholars, declared that children should be at the center of education and the student at the center of the school. The shift from the paradigm of education to the paradigm of learning, typical of later eras, is in line with this statement. This paper focuses on a specific aspect of the learning paradigm: formative assessment which has a profound influence on the education of students in general. Furthermore, what follows dwells on two in-service training courses for teachers that focus on this type of assessment with the aim of highlighting the main design features, the reference to the scientific assumptions and to highlight its innovative orientation also in the horizon of the school system.
