The current study combines elements of tourism studies, English for specific purposes, and classical rhetorical theory to examine emotional appeals in text-based promotional discourse in English for different forms of tourism, with an emphasis on developing effective textual emotional messages. Different kinds of tourism can engender different emotional responses; thus, it is necessary to analyze each type’s emotional calculus in detail. A database of English-language words associated with each emotion is presented. The database contains a number of grammatical forms for the English-language words along with usage notes relevant to tourist promotional discourse.

Abstract

The current study combines elements of tourism studies, English for specific purposes, and classical rhetorical theory to examine emotional appeals in text-based promotional discourse in English for different forms of tourism, with an emphasis on developing effective textual emotional messages. Different kinds of tourism can engender different emotional responses; thus, it is necessary to analyze each type’s emotional calculus in detail. A database of English-language words associated with each emotion is presented. The database contains a number of grammatical forms for the English-language words along with usage notes relevant to tourist promotional discourse.
