Guardare fuori. La wilderness come spazio di porosità

The following reflection aims to offer an initial inquiry into the semantic complexity of the idea of “Wilderness,” whose Italian translation is “Natura selvaggia” (“wild nature”). Starting from the structural ambiguity of the term — which refers not so much to a specific material object as to a particular configuration of the gaze — we will see how it consistently emerges at the intricate intersections between matter and symbol, reality and belief. Corresponding to the spatial dualism between village and forest, there is another, far more complex cultural opposition: that between the categories of the “known” and the “unknown,” ultimately resolved in the dyad “domestic/wild.” Through the lenses of anthropology, literature, the history of religions, and visual culture, this reflection seeks to move beyond this initial dualism by highlighting its nuances, opacities, and hybridizations. The aim is to underscore how proximity to the wild — that which lies outside the domestic perimeter — has always played an ambiguous and crucial role from a spiritual, cultural, and above all political perspective.

La seguente riflessione vuole essere una prima indagine intorno alla complessità semantica dell’idea di ‘Wilderness’, la cui traduzione italiana è “Natura selvaggia”. A partire dalla strutturale ambiguità del termine – che non si riferisce ad uno specifico oggetto materiale quanto più a una particolare configurazione dello sguardo – si vedrà come esso emerga sempre in quei complessi incroci tra materia e simbolo, realtà e credenza, e di come al dualismo spaziale tra villaggio e foresta ne corrisponda un altro di tipo culturale, ben più complesso: quello tra le categorie di ‘noto’ e ‘sconosciuto’, risolto nella diade ‘domestico/selvaggio’. Attraverso le lenti dell’antropologia, della letteratura, della storia delle religioni e della cultura visuale si cercherà di oltrepassare questo iniziale dualismo, evidenziandone le sfumature, le opacità e le ibridazioni, allo scopo di sottolineare come la prossimità con il selvaggio – ciò che sta fuori dal perimetro domestico – abbia sempre avuto un ruolo ambiguo e cruciale da un punto di vista spirituale, culturale e, soprattutto, politico.
