There is no guarantee that the best route is always the simplest or most direct one. Sometimes, it is necessary to seek out a Northwest Passage, a route through unexplored ice and the Arctic Ocean that might make it possible to discover new paths, improve trade, and open up new adventures. At times, travelling along uncharted routes can be dangerous, and one may even risk becoming trapped in the ice, as happened to John Franklin’s famous lost expedition of 1845, which disappeared near King William Island in the Canadian Arctic. Yet it is only by attempting to explore untrodden paths, imagine new horizons, and dream of different dawns and sunsets that we can learn to interpret the present we are given to live in, and imagine anew the future that awaits us. This is how “Northwest Passages” came into being: to investigate and discuss what is happening elsewhere, but which may also tell us something more about what is happening, or what might happen, in our own country.

Non è detto che la via migliore sia sempre quella più semplice o diretta. Talvolta, occorre individuare un passaggio a Nord-Ovest, una via tra i ghiacci inesplorati e l’oceano artico, che possa consentire di scoprire nuove rotte, migliorare i commerci, dischiudere nuove avventure. Talvolta può essere pericoloso percorrere rotte non ancora tracciate e si può perfino rischiare di rimanere incastrati nel ghiaccio, come accaduto alla celebre spedizione perduta di John Franklin del 1845, rimasta dispersa al largo dell’Isola di Re Guglielmo nell’artico canadese. Ma è solo nel tentativo di studiare strade non battute, immaginare nuovi orizzonti, sognare albe e tramonti differenti che si può tornare a interpretare e a immaginare di nuovo il presente che ci è dato da vivere e il futuro che ci attende. Nasce così “Passaggi a Nord-Ovest”, per indagare e discutere quello che avviene altrove ma che può dirci qualcosa di più rispetto a quello che accade - o potrebbe accadere - anche nel nostro Paese.
