The idea of this special issue is to provide details of teaching and learning discourse at university level drawing on qualitative analysis of empirical data in different national settings and related to the use of different languages (German, Italian, English, Japanese) used for academic knowledge mediation. This Introduction gives a short overview on the papers collected in this issue which includes also e Memorandum of principles of European academic education.
